Less than a Month to a New Decade!

I'm sure you have an idea of what you want to accomplish. Maybe the past decade has been underwhelming. Maybe you're still not where you thought you'd be. Or maybe, you're in a place you'd never dreamed!

Either way, you still need to think ahead. You still need to plan for the future.

When I was younger I hated planning for the future. It felt boring. It felt too structured for my free-spirit vibe. To me, if my life was already predicted, then where or when would I have room for fun and spontaneity? Well, if you don't plan your life then inevitably it will only be a matter of time where you'll fall under the plan or system of someone else. And its usually someone, or an organization, that you don't like.

Funny enough, once I started planning my days I ended up with more free time than I thought. Since I wasn't preoccupied with putting out fires that an unplanned life inevitably causes, I'm now able to go through life more centered and grounded, with less anxiety over wondering "Am I living up to my potential?"

Now, how do I plan my goals without feeling like I'm missing out on fun:

  1. Get clear on who you want to be. It doesn't matter how outrageous. As a matter of fact, it should scare you a little bit. That means you'll be forced to push yourself outside of your comfort zone. Once you've figured that out, Write it down.
  2. Reverse it. Yes, you read that right. Reverse engineer all the things you would need to do to get to that point. Of course you won't know everything but what you know so far, write everything down. Each thing on its own line.
  3. Once that's done, take stock of where you are now. How much money you have, your debt, your living situation.
You can't achieve what you won't measure.

In other words, you can't get to where you want, if you don't know where you are. Write it all down, each thing on its own line.

Now that you know who you'd like to be, you know what steps you'd need to take to get there and you know where you're starting from, This is when you start planning.

Taking a look at both lists, look at each line and you'll be creating another list associated with that line. For example; I want to learn how to cook. That would then look like: I want to learn how to cook > I need cooking utensils > I need recipes > Grocery shopping > Cook one recipe a day. Once you break down each goal into steps, you'll have a rough guideline for how you'll plan your days, weeks, months, quarters and then years.

Do this for each thing. if there is something that's on your list that you don't know what to do, Look it up! We live in an incredible time where you can look up information from almost any time in history and learn about it! Join forums, use social media. Get active toward getting to who you want to be.

Asana is your new best friend! Once all of these things are written down. Create an account on Asana and plug it all in. I love using the Asana template as it allows you to make a list, with each item being able to have subtasks, and the subtasks can have subtasks. And you can set deadlines! If you upgrade from the free version, you'll be able to be able to set start dates along with the deadlines.

The genius behind this is that you'll have a clear view of all the things you'll need to do to accomplish your goals. You'll know exactly what tasks you need to tackle on any given day.

This was a short guide for how you can get yourself in order to tackle your goals for 2020. And you don't have to wait until then, you can get a head-start on your 2020 Today!
